Oak posts, all the essentials

Product description

Oak posts are cut square from fresh oak logs and supplied rough-sawn. The straight faces and the various cross-sections make them versatile for posts, enclosures and other outdoor uses. Depending on the version, the posts are available pointed, cut off blunt or chamfered.

Oak is a hard and dense timber. The heartwood in particular has a good natural durability and is therefore often used for outdoor applications designed to last. The posts are worked left natural and without chemical impregnation.

Also common are the terms oak squared timber, oak fence post and oak gate post.

The same square post in larch, optionally planed and kiln-dried, is available as Larch posts; naturally grown and round, the same timber species is called Oak round posts. All stakes and posts are in the Stakes & Posts overview.

Areas of use

Oak posts are used above all in fence building and in garden and landscape construction. Typical applications are fence, corner and gate posts, pasture and paddock fences, edgings and posts for climbing frames and pergolas. Thanks to the various cross-sections and the individually selectable lengths, the posts can be adapted to different projects and versions.

Origin & sustainability

The timber for our oak posts comes from sustainably managed forests in Germany.

Delivery

Delivery is made through various freight partners. The lead time is as a rule approx. 2 to 4 weeks and can vary according to the dimensions, the order quantity and the delivery location.

The oak posts are supplied by the pallet. Larger order quantities up to complete or several lorry loads can be organised accordingly.

Half-full or mixed pallets are also possible at extra cost.

Collection in person is possible by arrangement directly at the production site in question. Collection at our location in Hennef is not possible.

Depending on the scope of delivery and the vehicle used, a forklift or comparable lifting equipment may be needed for unloading.

Important notes

  • Oak posts are freshly cut and supplied rough-sawn. This is not technically dried timber, nor timber graded as KVH.
  • As it dries, shrinkage cracks, slight distortion and changes in the dimensions can occur. These are typical of the material in freshly cut timber.
  • The posts are not graded free of heartwood or free of knots. Knots and differences in texture and grain can therefore occur.
  • Depending on the cut, proportions of sapwood, waney edge or occasional remains of bark may be present. If there are particular requirements regarding knots, sapwood content, waney edge or the visual version, these can be agreed in advance for the project and allowed for when selecting the goods.
  • Oak contains natural tannins. In the presence of moisture these can react with iron and cause dark to black discolouration in the timber.
  • Further lengths and cross-sections are possible subject to availability and can be enquired about made to size.

Does oak have to be impregnated?

No. We supply oak left natural and without chemical impregnation, which is how it is traditionally used in fence and stake building.
