In detail

Robinia half-round rails, all the essentials

Product description

Robinia half-round rails are made from naturally grown, debarked robinia logs that are halved lengthwise. This creates a flat face for secure fixing and a naturally rounded outer face.

Robinia is regarded as Europe's most durable timber, harder than oak and by nature so resistant that no impregnation is needed. Its heartwood protects itself against fungi and rot.

As rails made from the same long-lasting timber, they are the ideal complement to robinia stakes, left natural and made for many years outdoors.

Half-round rails are also called half-round timbers, half-round poles or simply cross rails.

The same rail is available debarked in sweet chestnut as Sweet chestnut half-round rails and machine-rounded in softwood as Softwood half-round rails. The matching stakes for them are in the Stakes & Posts overview.

How the rails are fixed to the stakes and what to watch for when pre-drilling is described in the article Setting robinia stakes.

Areas of use

Robinia half-round rails are used above all as horizontal rails in fence building. Typical applications are pasture and paddock fences and other enclosures in garden and landscape construction. The flat face offers a suitable bearing surface for connecting to stakes, while the rounded outer face keeps the natural character of the timber.

Origin & sustainability

The timber for our robinia half-round rails comes predominantly from eastern European sources. Depending on availability, other European regions of origin can also be used.

Robinia heartwood has a high natural durability and is therefore suitable for numerous outdoor applications.

Delivery

Delivery is made through various freight partners. That lets us cover most common transport routes and delivery regions.

Delivery normally takes around 4 weeks and can vary depending on dimensions, order quantity and delivery location.

The robinia half-round rails are supplied by the pallet. Larger order quantities up to complete or several lorry loads can be organised accordingly.

Depending on the scope of delivery and the vehicle used, a forklift or comparable lifting equipment may be needed to unload the pallets. Please tell us with your enquiry what unloading facilities are available on site.

Collection at our Hennef address is not possible, as only our offices are located there.

Important notes

  • Robinia half-round rails are made from naturally grown timber. Deviations in shape, diameter and surface are therefore typical of the material.
  • Slight curves as well as cracks from the natural drying of the timber can occur.
  • Robinia does not grow straight by nature. With long rails, say 3.00 m or 3.50 m, we therefore do not recommend thin diameters: it is sometimes feasible, but with a small diameter over the whole length we cannot promise that the rails will be sufficiently straight. The longer the rail, the heavier the diameter that should be chosen.
  • Further lengths and diameters are possible on request subject to availability.
Pasture fence calculator

Plan your pasture fence directly

The pasture fence calculator supports you in rough planning: it helps to work out the stake length, post spacing and number of pieces. Add boards or rails depending on the version and see an example illustration of your fence. The figures are guide values and are no substitute for detailed planning.

Good to know

Robinia half-round rails, frequently asked questions

What do robinia half-round rails cost?

Timber prices move with quantity, size and delivery location. That is why we calculate at current day rates rather than from outdated price lists. Your written quote follows promptly, usually within 24 hours.

Which sizes and lengths are available?

Our standard sizes are in the size table on this page. A note on combinations: robinia does not grow straight, so with long rails such as 3.00 m or 3.50 m we do not recommend thin diameters. Further lengths and diameters are possible subject to availability and can be enquired about at any time.

Does robinia need to be impregnated?

No. We supply robinia left natural – no impregnation needed, including for applications with ground contact.

How long does delivery take?

The lead time is as a rule approx. 4 weeks. It can vary according to the dimensions, the order quantity and the delivery location.
