How do I configure my handrail?

Step by step

The eleven decisions

From the shape to the quantity – in this order it goes fastest. Choose on the left, and the essentials appear on the right.

02

Choose the size and cross-section

Every shape is available in one to three sizes. Round in Ø 42, Ø 45 and Ø 50 mm, oval in 55 × 30 and 60 × 40 mm, rectangular in 50 × 30 and 80 × 30 mm. Square, Omega kompakt and Omega klassisch each have one fixed size.

03

Choose the timber species

Four timbers are available: oak, beech, maple, ash. Every shape is available in each of these species. Beech takes lacquer most evenly, maple is the lightest and ash the toughest. All four are in the Handrails category.

04

Decide on the surface treatment

Untreated means you get the timber as it is and can oil or lacquer it yourself. Oiled keeps the texture noticeable and can be re-oiled at any time. Lacquered gives a closed surface that is insensitive to sweaty hands – the right choice in busy stairwells.

Choose the head finish

A handrail usually ends differently on the left and on the right, which is why the configurator asks for the sides one after the other: step 05 for one, step 06 for the other. Square cut suits where it meets a wall or a post. The 5 mm radius breaks the edge where it runs out freely. With the round profile there is additionally the M12 thread for end caps and the matching end bend, which returns the handrail to the wall. End bends, end caps and connectors are under Handrail accessories.

Choose the handrail bracket

EasyFit für M12 is screwed in rather than bolted on and fits every shape. We make the matching pre-drilling at the works; it is selected in step 09. Typ B has a round mounting plate for round and oval, Typ C a flat plate for the angular profiles. Two screws are included with both. All three types are supplied in uncoloured stainless steel.

Determine the number of brackets

The number depends on the length you enter in step 10: two brackets up to 150 cm, then one more for every additional 100 cm started. The calculator further down gives you the figure directly.

09

Choose pre-drilling

This question concerns the EasyFit für M12 bracket. With pre-drilling we drill the handrail at the works at the bracket positions and insert the threaded socket; all you do is screw the brackets in. You can specify the positions or have them distributed evenly. Without pre-drilling the handrail is left unmachined in this respect. Typ B and Typ C are fixed via their mounting plate, and there is no pre-drilling at the works for those.

Set the length

Freely selectable from 20 to 800 cm, accurate to the centimetre. Measure along the wall the distance the handrail is to cover and add the overhang you want at each end. Up to 350 cm we make it in one piece; above that we supply it in sections with a plug-in system.

11

Quantity

Finally the number of pieces. It applies to the handrail exactly as you have put it together in the steps before. If you need several handrails that differ in length, shape, timber species or surface, put each of them together separately. What is identical can go through in one pass as a number of pieces.

Which bracket do I need, and how many?

First choose the type, then set the length. Together the two give you your bracket list.

EasyFit für M12, with thread

The bracket is screwed in rather than bolted on. We pre-drill the handrail at the positions you want and insert the thread. All you do is screw the bracket in. The only bracket that fits all six profile shapes.

Typ B, round mounting plate

The mounting plate follows the curve of the profile and therefore sits flush over its whole face. Two screws are included; the bracket is fitted on site, without pre-drilling at the works.

On request we pre-drill the handrail at the bracket positions at the works (only with the EasyFit für M12 bracket). You specify the spacings, or we divide them evenly.

How many brackets do I need?

As a rule of thumb: two brackets up to 150 cm, then one more for every additional 100 cm started. The brackets are distributed evenly over the length.

Why not fewer? A handrail has to take a load as a fall protection. Spacings that are too large let it flex, and over time the screws work their way out of the wall. Simply set your length below and the number appears straight away.

From practice

Three things that are often forgotten

Think of both ends separately

A handrail rarely begins and ends in the same way. At the bottom it often runs out freely and is given a radius or an end bend; at the top it meets the wall and is square cut. That is why we ask for the left and the right separately.

Measure first, then set the total length

Before ordering, work out what handrail length you actually need: the distance the handrail is to cover plus the overhang you want at both ends. While doing so, check whether end treatments or further components are added to the length ordered.

Order the end bend and the handrail together

With our matching end bend, the connection is prepared at the works: handrail and end bend are given the matching M12 connection and can then be screwed together. You will find end bends under Handrail accessories.

Frequently asked questions

Answers about configuring

Do I have to give all the details?

Yes, and it makes sense to. Only with complete details can the handrail be made to measure and prepared the way it will be needed later. That includes the profile, timber species, length, surface and, where applicable, the preparation wanted for brackets or accessories.

Can I combine shape and timber species freely?

Yes. We make all the profile shapes offered in oak, beech, maple and ash. Profile shape and timber species can therefore be combined freely.

Can I have the handrail prepared for the brackets?

Yes. With the EasyFit für M12 bracket the handrail can be prepared at the works at the bracket positions you want and fitted with the corresponding threaded socket. The positions can be specified by you or distributed to suit. With the Typ B and Typ C brackets, fixing is instead done via the respective mounting plate.

Is the length of the end bend added to the handrail length ordered?

Yes. The matching end bend extends the handrail by approx. 7.5 cm. If, for example, a handrail 120 cm long is ordered together with an end bend, the total length afterwards is about 127.5 cm.
