Buying fence timber for a garden fence, from the paling fence to the Bonanza fence board

Which timber fence suits where?

A sweet chestnut paling fence is the classic enclosure for the garden and front garden: cleft or sawn palings on galvanised binding wire, without chemical treatment, supplied as a roll. Bonanza fence boards in oak, larch and spruce with a visible waney edge give the rustic, wide fence appearance and are often used along property boundaries and at paddocks. How a fence of sweet chestnut palings is built is shown in the guide Building a sweet chestnut paling fence.

The classic pale fence is made from fence pales or fence boards on fence rails, carried by fence posts. How closed the fence looks depends above all on the width of the pales and the spacing chosen; for screening the parts are set close together, for an open enclosure with air in between.

Fence pale, fence board, fence rail or fence post?

Fence pales are the narrow vertical parts, commonly around 20 × 55 or 24 × 60 mm, in larch and spruce. Fence boards are wider, usually 20 × 80 or 20 × 95 mm, and close the surface more; they are also available in larch and spruce. Fence rails run horizontally and carry the pales or boards; 45 × 75 and 45 × 95 mm are common, planed with a weather chamfer or as half-round rails, available in larch or spruce.

Fence posts stand vertically as intermediate and end posts, rough-sawn or planed, in larch and spruce. What goes into the ground comes from the Stakes and Posts category; there you will find stakes in oak, robinia, sweet chestnut and treated softwood.

Surfaces and head finishes

Fence pales, fence boards and fence posts are available rough-sawn or planed, fence rails planed; half-round fence pales we supply planed only. Rough-sawn stock can look more rustic, planed stock smoother; which version suits is above all a question of the appearance you want.

We supply fence pales with a bevelled head or square cut, fence boards additionally with a round head. On request, fence posts are given a head chamfer, a chamfer on the long sides or both; square cut, pointed or with a round head is also possible. Left untreated, larch greys evenly to a silvery tone; spruce is the economical option for sheltered positions.
